Catching Up - E

E is for emusic.com. For reasons that will become clear when I get to M, I was in the market for MP3s shortly after last Christmas. Long story short, I went on a three month long emusic.com bender. Emusic is the perfect (for me) combination of outstanding indie selection, DRM-free/platform-independent downloads, legality and affordability. You have to pay by the month and your monthly allottment of downloads doesn't carry over from month to month, but if you use your full allottment each month, you end up paying around 30 cents per track, which blows services like iTunes out of the water. And they have a truly outstanding selection of indie music. My MP3 player is currently completely filled with stuff I have no intention of losing, so I've allowed my subscription to expire. But I'll be back. Oh, yes. I'll be back.
