Catching Up - H

H is for Hollywood, whose output I've been consuming in copious quantities lately via DVD. A few thoughts:
  • Life Is Beautiful is a great movie.
  • I've long been torn between Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Who would I rather be? I've finally decided. I'm a Gregory Peck man.
  • I can now officially say I just don't get the whole Audrey Hepburn thing. I've seen My Fair Lady, Roman Holiday, Love In The Afternoon, Breakfast At Tiffany's and Charade. Am I missing something? I just don't see why she's considered to be such a big deal. Lovely and charming, sure, but no more so that a few dozen other actresses.
  • Hey, who would have guessed Cybill Shepherd doesn't completely suck? She was very good in Taxi Driver, meaning she only mostly sucks.
  • See (4) above, but replace Cybill Shepherd with Shirley MacLaine and Taxi Driver with The Apartment.
  • Liz Taylor. Yeah, I know. Ick, ick, ick. But man she was smoking hot in Suddenly Last Summer.
  • Want to know the definition of anticlimax? Putting in the Alien DVD and realizing you actually have Alien Resurrection. Ouch.
  • A John Malkovich sighting! He was in The Killing Fields. I defy anyone reading this post to name off the top of their head three other movies featuring the Malk. And if you're a chick, Dangerous Liasons doesn't count. Before this sighting, the only thing I had known John Malkovich for was actually being John Malkovich. And Being John Malkovich, of course. Turns out he's an actor or something.
  • V for Vendetta. Let's see. Wachowski brothers? Check. Hugo Weaving? Check. Natalie Portman in all her hotness? Check. You have all of that going for you and you still end up with one of the worst movies in recent memory? That takes some doin' folks. And Natalie, please stop trying to do accents. You're terrible.
  • I watched Woody Allen's Manhattan the other night and I still feel like I need a shower. Can't say he didn't warn us on the whole pedophilia thing, though.
  • Not even mediocrities like Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon can undo the greatness that is Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest.
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind still kicks much ass.
  • As does Dr. Strangelove.
  • One line summary of Woman Of The Year: "Get your ass back in the kitchen and fix me a sammich, beyotch."
  • A Clockwork Orange sucks long and hard, my droogies.
  • After long and careful consideration, and having just watched Good Night, and Good Luck (which was only so-so, as movies go), I have to say I would totally consider going gay for George Clooney. What a strikingly attractive man. Sure he's only a pale imitation of Cary Grant, but Clooney's still alive, which has to count for something if you're going to consider going gay.
